Writing is the most difficult language skill for many young children to acquire. In fact, writing is not just one skill, but the combination of many different skill-sets together, from the physical aspects — such as how to hold a pencil and letter formation — to awareness of the connection between spoken word and the written word, and the ability to connect ideas together to achieve a variety of written tasks. A teacher also faces tremendous challenges when considering the uneven development of his or her students’ writing abilities, making the teaching of writing all the more difficult. This workshop will introduce a structured approach to teaching students through text analysis, scaffolding, and process writing. Through the use of exemplar readings and practicing writing in different text types, students can build their knowledge of text structure and language features and become more effective writers in English.
